What are plantation shutters?

Plantation shutters are more popular than ever, as homeowners realise their value as a long-term investment that may replace standard blinds and curtains.

The moniker “plantation shutters” conjures up images of southern US regions where these shutters were popular for their aesthetic appeal as well as their insulating properties. Given the fluctuations of climate in this region of the country, plantation shutters’ capacity to keep a space warm in the winter and cool in the summer makes them indispensable.

Without going into too much technical information Plantation shutters are distinguished by their easy tilt option hardwood louvers that resemble blind slats. Shutters, unlike blinds, are attached to the window frame and can be opened like doors rather than using a pull-string.

These are available in a variety of materials, with MDF and vinyl being two of the most popular. Many individuals prefer more classic plantation shutters made of hardwood, especially in period homes where a modern material like MDF would look jarring and incorrect.

Solid Plantation shutters are low-maintenance once installed, and you may expect many years of use and enjoyment. When they’re open, they give a room a sense of light and space, and when they’re closed, they provide privacy, block out light and noise, and help keep the room at a reasonable temperature. It’s amazing how much of a difference they can make in a home.
